Bill C-23 - Send Ralph a Message

WHEREAS, the Liberals’ proposed Bill C-23 would give US Customs and Border Protection pre-clearance agents in Canada sweeping powers to carry firearms, perform strip searches, and to detain and interrogate travellers;

WHEREAS, travellers have already reported that US border agents are searching smartphones, requiring account passwords, and asking travellers questions about their political beliefs as well as their opinions of U.S. President Donald Trump;

WHEREAS, the policy changes of the Trump Administration in Washington must be taken into account by the Canadian government, and Trump’s recent discriminatory executive orders and attacks against privacy rights by U.S. customs agents leave no doubt about the potential for abuses;

WHEREAS, Canadians need assurances from their government that they will not be subjected to discrimination or intimidation at our borders;

WHEREAS, Canadians cannot allow ease of travel at the borders to come at the expense of human rights, the privacy rights of Canadians, and Canadian sovereignty; and

WHEREAS, Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale did not raise the issue in Washington during the first visit with the Trump Administration, and the Liberal government is acting as if the Trump administration were business as usual;

We the undersigned call on Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale and the Liberal Government to stand up to Trump and withdraw Bill C-23.
